Our Saturday Full of Fun!

School starts tomorrow!  Yikes, I have a kindergartener and a 4th grader!  Last year before school started, we took the girls to Kings Island.  This year we decided to do something a little different.  We told the girls that we were going to have a day of fun, and each person in the family got to choose something fun we wanted to do.

Stop #1 McKenna's Choice

We headed to the IMA 100-acre park.  It has hiking trails, a lake, and lots to look at and do.  It was a blast!  Great choice McKenna!

Stop #2  Family Choice

We found a local park and had a wonderful picnic lunch!

Stop #3 Macy's Choice

Next, we headed to the town of Greenwood to the splash pad.  They had a park to play on, and a splash pad.  The girls even made a new friend.  It was so much fun!  Great choice for a hot day Macy!

Stop #4 Kristen's Choice

Then, we headed down to Columbus, IN to an old fashioned Ice Cream Parlor called Zaharako's.  It was beautiful, and the ice cream was very tasty!!!  Check out our ice cream sundaes.  I have never seen one like that before!!!  We were hyped up on sugar when we left!

Stop #5 Impromptu Family Stop

We left Zaharako's to head back to the car and noticed The Common's across the street.  It was an indoor facility for kids to run and play.  The girls loved it!

Stop #6 Jeremy's Choice

Next, we headed back north to Whiteland to Rascal's Fun Zone.  We rode go-karts, played mini-golf, and played some games.  We won lots of tickets, and the girls got to choose some prizes.  The girls loved it!

Our day ended with a trip to the mall for new sneakers and we picked up a pizza on the way home at about 8:00 p.m.  It was a long, fun day!!!

Now I just have to get my mind wrapped around the fact that my oldest baby is in 4th grade, and my youngest baby is a big kindergartener!  Oh my!  Where does the time go?

Food Fanatic Friday!

Summer time is a great time for cool, crisp veggie pizza squares!  They are a favorite for us at cookouts and at the lake.

Here is my recipe, and it is fantastic!!!

Ingredients:
2 cans of crescent rolls
1 (8oz) pkg. cream cheese
1/2 cup of mayo
1 pkg. hidden valley ranch dressing (not dip)
1 pkg. shredded cheddar cheese
3/4 cup peas

Chopped broccoli, cauliflower, carrots.
Shredded mild cheddar cheese.

Separate and place flat crescent rolls triangles onto a greased pan.  Bake at 375* for 8-10 minutes.

Place on wax paper to cool completely.

In a bowl, mix cream cheese, mayo, and ranch mix.  Spread on the crescent triangles.  Add chopped veggies and peas.  Top with shredded cheese.

Cut each triangle into 3 pieces with pizza cutter.  Refrigerate until served.  Enjoy!

Our Growth Hormone Stimulation Test & Results

We had our growth hormone stimulation test on Tuesday.  One of the challenges was so have Macy NPO (no food, drink, meds) after midnight.  We gave it a trial run last week.  The plan was to get up at midnight, give her a shake, and then give it a trial run of being NPO for 9-10 hours.  When I first checked her that morning at 8:15 she was 64.  Not great, but Macy is normally lower than the average person.  I then checked her again at 9:00 and she went up to 71.  So I let her go ahead and eat.  On the day of the test, we followed the same procedure...getting up at midnight and giving her shake.  Jeremy and I got up early and snuck some food before we woke Macy up.  Poor girl was already hungry when she got up.

When we arrived at 7:21, the doors were still locked at the infusion center.  They told us to arrive at 7:30, so we decided to wait in a waiting area down the way from the infusion center.  A lady working the front desk in the waiting area started chatting with Macy about her American Girl Doll she had brought.  In talking with her, she told us that one of her grown daughters was on growth hormone injections and she started at the age of 10.  She told us all about the test, and then shared with us some information about the Human Growth Foundation.  She was a board member for years.  I guess it was meant to be that we arrived early, went to that waiting area, and met that woman.

We arrived at the infusion center, filled out some initial paperwork, and then waited.  We waited, and waited, and waited.  I didn't check Macy's blood sugar because she appeared to be fine and I kept thinking we would be going back soon.  Pretty soon they came out and said it would be a little longer because they were waiting on some specifics for her orders.  Not sure exactly what, but after about 15 more minutes, they called us back.

The nurse was awesome and walked Macy through the whole process.  The first thing was to give her the IV.  This picture is right after the IV was placed.  Our brave girl was still all smiles.  And isn't she just beautiful!?!?!

After the IV was placed, they did a blood draw.  Then they came in with a small pill for her to take.  It was a pill to put her body in sleep mode.  Your pituitary gland produces the growth hormone the best when you are sleeping.  She fought it for almost an hour and then passed out.  They did another blood draw and then started her on the IV drip that would stimulate her growth hormones.  That ran for 30 minutes and was then unhooked.  They then did another blood draw every 30 minutes for 2 hours.  She had a total of 6 blood draws (2 tubes each time ) taken.  That is a lot of blood.  In addition to the normal blood tests, they used some of the blood to check her blood sugar each time.  The lowest it got the entire time was 76, the highest was 99.  Yay Macy!

When the test was over, she was finally able to have a snack.  They made sure she ate and drank before they let her leave.  You can tell she still wasn't quite awake in the photo below. She was groggy for the remainder of the afternoon.  We were told she couldn't operate under the influence....any scooters or bikes, lol.  We left and went straight through the Taco Bell drive thru to get her favorite lunch.  Jeremy, Macy, and I fell asleep on the couch that afternoon...we were all exhausted.  Thankfully, that was one of the easiest tests we've ever had with Macy.  The logistics going into it ended up being the most stressful part of all...How will her blood sugars hold out?  How will her body respond to the meds administered  considering her multi-systematic defects?  Well, she did great and so did her body.  We are unbelievably proud to have such a strong little girl!

RESULTS
Our endocrinologist called me on Thursday with results.  I honestly thought this was going to be pretty cut and dry, but it turns out things are more complicated that we thought.  First of all her pituitary gland is functioning normally and producing enough growth hormones.  Yay for that!!!  I am very happy we don't have to add to her list of things in her body not working properly!  But something is still not right.  She is producing enough growth hormones from the pituitary glands, but she is still not growing, and the growth factors in her blood are too low.

Here is how the growth hormone process works.  Your pituitary gland produces the growth hormone. Some goes out to your body immediately to produce growth, and some travels to your liver.  Your liver produces something called IGF-1, and it is then sent out to your body to aid in more growth.

Here is how a normal liver works vs how Macy's liver currently works.  In a normal liver, your portal vein carries everything you need to your liver processes it and sends it out to your body through the inferior vena cava.  Macy's portal vein bypasses her liver and connects right into her inferior vena cava.  So as far as we know, her blood that is carrying nutrients does not get processed and cleaned through her liver.

So, if growth hormones are being sent to the liver...and if the liver is supposed to create IGF-1, is Macy's liver receiving and creating anything?  Our endocrinologist and I had a big discussion about this over the phone.  We aren't sure.  So this looks like a liver problem rather than an endocrine problem.  So my big question was, "If Macy's body is not producing IGF-1, can we get this to her through a supplement?"  Our doctor said, they do make it.  It is a 2x a day injection.  At this point she isn't sure how readily available it is because she has NEVER treated a patient with it.

She is going to do 2 things:
1.  See if we can get access to it, and how getting this for Macy would work.
2.  She is going to contact some of Macy's other specialists to see if they would agree that this is the problem, and see if they can agree that the daily IGF-1 injections would work for her.

So, can we just fix the liver?  Yes and no.  There are only 2 options for Macy's liver, but so far with her liver lab work being stable, we don't want to mess with her liver unless we absolutely have to.

1.  There is a possibility of creating a shunt from her portal vein to her liver.  It is a newer fix, and has been successful on some patients.  I do not know if they are doing it at Riley yet, but we know a doctor in Chicago who is doing it.

2.  The only other fix is a liver transplant.  It would have to be a full transplant and not a partial because she doesn't even have the hook-up in her liver for the portal vein to go to.  We do not want to have to go this route.  Initially, we were told this was the only "fix" until a few years ago.

So in the meantime, I have put calls into our GI and Metabolism doctors to fill them in as well as get their input on the results. I talked with our GI nurse the same day we got the results.  She pulled all reports and test results and presented them to the doctor the very next morning.   They called by 10 a.m. and want to see her in clinic.  They worked her in for August 24th but placed her on a waiting list for any earlier appointments.

Thank you all for following along with Macy journey.  I appreciate all the prayers for Macy and our family.  The main prayer I am requesting right now is for answers!  We will be keeping you updated when we find out a plan of action.

So, cut and dry?  Not a chance.  She's not 1 in a million, she's 1 in a billion! It's just part of what makes this amazing girl who she is!  I couldn't love her any more....she amazes me every day!

Do You Have A Bucket List?

Do you have a bucket list?  I do!  I made a bucket list a few years ago after realizing there were so many things that I still wanted to do in my life.  Some of the things that are marked off on the list were added days, months, even years after I did them, but I just don't want to ever forget that I did them.

Sports, Activities, Busy Life....Oh My!

Sports and activities are keeping us very busy!  We have really appreciated a few weekends with no games or activities, and know that we are getting ready to get back into the crazy life once school starts.  But we wouldn't have it any other way!

Both of our girls absolutely love to be involved in groups and activities!  Being a part of a group or team can be so beneficial to children.

McKenna's Activities

Baseball is one of her favorites!  She loves to smack that ball and run around the bases.  She really started learning how to play in the field well this year, and had a blast!  Check out her bright batting helmet and cleats...she just had to have them!!!  Next spring McKenna is old enough to start softball, so we will be transitioning to that.

Basketball was a new sport of McKenna.  She is quite the guard!  She never quite got the ball high enough to make a basket, but tried with all her heart each time!

Soccer was also new to McKenna last fall, but you would've thought she had been playing for a few years.  She zooms up and down that field like a rocket.  It's so much fun to watch.  We are getting ready to start back up in a few weeks.  And I should mention that Jeremy coaches McKenna in all of these sports!

Things the girls do together

The girls are finally getting some swimming lessons.  We go to a local place called Indy Island.  It's an indoor facility.  Since Macy struggles often to control her body temp, we knew we needed somewhere indoor and heated.  It was a perfect match!  We've now taken 7 lessons, and the girls are making huge improvements.  They are able to tread water on their own.  Macy doesn't like getting her face under the water, but will paddle across the pool.  McKenna on the other hand just sticks her face right in and takes off. They are so much fun to watch!

The girls also do gymnastics together.  McKenna is in a 5 & 6 year old class, and Macy is in the Bronze Advanced class.  Gymnastics has helped Macy's flexibility and strength.  She still struggles sometimes making her body move in the right way, but she is doing fantastic.  McKenna has benefited as well, but I can see this as a sport she may give up due to her other sports.

Macy's Activities

A few years ago we were in search of a sport that Macy could do since she can't do anything that requires much endurance and cannot do any contact sports.  We decided golf might just be the thing for her.  It was so exciting to see that she actually took right to it!  She has quite the swing!  She has been taking lessons from a golf pro at a local golf course.  She absolutely loves it!!!

Girl Scouts has been heaven sent for Macy.  She is an amazingly giving and caring person, so this is such a great activity for her.  This is a picture of her working at a local food pantry by packaging meals for others.  The have volunteered at the animal shelter, made gifts for troops, visited nursing homes, handmade blankets for Riley Hospital, and raised money through lemonade stands for organizations like Make-A-Wish.  It has been so wonderful for her!

So as you can see our girls are very busy!  We are so blessed that they have been given these opportunities and are able to participate.  Can't wait to see what the future holds!

Our Family and Beyond: Changes Happening

Why can't time just stand still for a little while?  Our children, as well as our nieces and nephews just keep growing up and changing so much!  Here is a picture of the Taylor grandkids from a couple of years ago.

Here is a picture of the Taylor grandkids last weekend!  Taylor is now 17, has a boyfriend and a driver's license.  Brock is 14.  He spent his summer working as an umpire and mowing lawns.  He has now started training for football season. Mallory is 13 (almost 14).  She is a super athlete!  She plays travel softball and volleyball.  Darcy is 6 (almost 7).  She just finished her kindergarten year, and is so excited to start first grade.  She also played minor ball this year and will start softball next year.  Where has the time gone?

Here are a couple more pictures of Taylor and Brock, and Mallory and Darcy. They are all such great kids, and I am very proud to be their aunt!

Our nephew Eli is now 3 year old, and will be 4 in November!  Every time the kids are together, we all can't get over how much McKenna and Eli look alike.  I guess they both have some VanVleet in them.

McKenna and Eli snacking on pistachios.

The VanVleets and Wishards at Easter.

We have some really great news!  Jeremy's sister, Jessica, and her husband are expecting their 2nd child.  Elijah is going to be a big brother to a little sister!  The whole family is so excited to welcome this baby girl into the family, and we are suspecting if she looks like her brother she might look just like McKenna.

My sweet grandparents made a big move last fall!  They are now living 5 minutes down the road from my parents' house in Florida.  Moving from Arizona to Florida is a big move, and we are so happy they have done it!  I know my parents love it, and it now gives us more opportunities to visit them more often.

Not only did they take on the challenge of a big move, but my grandparents are now facing another challenge. My grandmother was recently diagnosed with ALS.  We are all saddened by this, but she couldn't have a more positive outlook.  She is amazing, and is adamant about doing as much as she can for as long as she is able to.  She is a strong woman, and I am so proud of her.  My grandfather is also doing an amazing job helping my grandmother in so many ways.  I know this is very hard on them.  I love them so much!  We have plans to travel to Florida in October to spend some more time with them.  The girls are so excited!
